The basic idea behind Ho‘oponopono stems from the meaning of the word, given to us by the Hawaiian culture. Loosely translated, Ho‘oponopono means "to set things right", or, in more simple terms, to fix stuff!

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:

Ho'oponopono is a Hawaiian word for a form of family or personal therapy.
Practitioners believe that it is a revival of ancient Hawaiian practices.

In the 1980s, Morrnah Simeona developed what she called an updated and streamlined version of ho'oponopono that is practiced by the individual alone. Morrnah was recognized as a kahuna by the mainstream press and public. Her practice continues to be taught by her students in Hawai'i, including Ramsay Taum, and Ihaleakala Hew Len, Ph. D. According to Hew Len, ho'oponopono is a Hawaiian healing process based on the principles of total responsibility, taking responsibility for everyone's actions. He says if one would take complete responsibility for one's life, then everything one would see, hear, taste, touch, or in any way experience is one's responsibility because it is in one's life. Total Responsibility advocates that everything exists as a projection from inside the human being. The problem isn't with our external reality, it is with ourselves and to change our reality, we would have to change ourselves.

Ho'oponopono is the releasing of past memories to be able to live in the now.

Dr. Ihaleakala Hew Len
Mabel Katz

Thanks for posting this video, Sierra...It was fun to "follow along" in their rather complicated interpretation of Ho'oponopono (Ho open open oh). Interestingly, that statement was nearly identical to a native american ceremony that I participated in on the Saturday after 9/11/2001 at Twin Lakes Beach in Santa Cruz, CA. I was told, by the indian chief performing the ceremony, that it was the ancient indian way to ask for forgiveness when tragedies occurred. I found the ceremony incredibly healing and did not suffer what so many of my friends (who did not participate) suffered in the days/weeks/months following. I know that it was healing on many levels for me.

For anyone who is new to Ho'oponopono, it is incredibly powerful and very easy to learn. Just start with:

I love you
I'm sorry
Please forgive me
Thank you

I've used this whenever someone around me has been angry or attacking, and found that it both protects me (from absorbing another person's energies) and soothes the angry person (because they feel heard as I listen quietly, and I am not fighting back, fueling their anger). Parents of teens can really use this...it has helped me tremendously with my son and we have a great relationship now.

All you have to do is try it...and see for yourself!

Many blessings, Nancy

ty22 Sierra and Nancy! I have Joe Vitale's "Zero Limits" but so far it is still in my "To Be Read" list.

I heard that Dr. Len will be holding a seminar in Frankfurt, Germany in September and I feel I should go there...

Stephanie, if you feel you must go, then a way will open up for this to happen. Focus on the outcome (being there, enjoying it, getting so much out of it, being glad you went)...then see what shows up. ;-)

By the way, I have always pronounced Ho'oponopono as Ho-open-open-oh as it just rolls off my tongue that way....but someone corrected me the other day, saying it is Ho-oh-poh-noh-poh-noh. Gosh, it sticks in my throat when I try to pronounce it that way.

Any other creative pronunciations?

Many blessings,
Nancy
