I’ve been waiting since last July — almost an entire year — for the release of Transformation, the documentary about est founder Werner Erhard.
It’s finally out and I finally saw it.
It’s riveting, inspiring, and unforgettable.
Seeing the old clips of Werner delivering est trainings in the 1970s, hearing him today, getting the inside story on how the media exploited him, was eye-opening.
I’m pleased to see Werner is still around and still awakening people.
He’s still ruthless in confronting people about forgiving the past, taking full responsibility for life, and taking a stand for something in the world.
That’s his mission and his calling, and he’s still walking his talk.
My biggest problem with the guy was he never smiled. Virtually all enlightened teachers smile.
At the end of this terrific film, as the credits are rolling, Werner says “There’s something great sitting in your chair,” and he smiles a little as he reflects on that exciting idea.
Get this movie.

And remember, there’s something great sitting in your chair.
Ao Akua,
Joe

Werner as a symbol begs the questions: Is the media the message? Are we our history? Can the teachings of a possible con man have value in our lives from a standpoint of integrity?
And of course those can be answered by asking another question: Did est work??
I never did the whole Werner-worship thing, nor did I go out recruiting. AND I found that the process worked in my life, and I was willing to share that with any who saw it. So if est got $350 of my hard-earned dollars and Werner got the lion's share of that it's OK, because the training worked in my life and still does. I look at so many people around me who are stuck in their beliefs, who have a vested interest (payoff) in such things as being sick or miserable, and while I'm no better than they I choose NOT to be stuck in such things. Is it a coincidence that I'm very healthy physically and mentally? Possibly... but likely not.
IMO people did misinterpret the rigor of the training. The point of not taking medicine, for example, is to show that you CAN be at cause in your life rather than constantly at the effect of little afflictions. And to show that medicines mask real experience. I live that daily; as an example, once in awhile I will feel the pollen in the air and sneeze a few times. Many folk will see that as a reason to take Sudafed, or run to a doctor and get allergy shots. For me the moment is here, then it's gone. My body adjusts, and I spend the rest of the day not sneezing. No meds required. BTW, it's my opinion that in many cases allergies (and many other illnesses) are little more than control mechanisms. They allow the ill person a means to control those around him/her; they are what est calls a racket.
Similarly, the thing about no bathroom breaks between authorized breaks is misinterpreted. It's not done to assert their control over you! It's done to show you that you CAN master your body, that YOU can control you, that you can make choices in how you respond to such things. It provides a context for mastering your life.
IMO est, if you can steer clear of the "go out and sell" aspect, is perhaps an ultimate deprogrammer. Which of course does not go over well with the established programming of society.
