Jungle Living - Experiencing the Rainforest of Costa Rica
I live on the Osa Peninsula of Costa Rica, which is on the South Pacific side, in a place called Drake Bay. This area is known by National Geographic as the most biologically intense place on earth! Drake Bay was so named for Sir Francis Drake who rumor has it, buried treasure here. I am still looking for it, but I find other kinds of treasures on a daily basis.
There is a large troop of white faced monkeys that live around here. After ten years we have become quite familiar with each other and they frequently come into my room to hang out (literally!). My room is open, with only half walls, true tropical living, so they can come and go as they please along with hummingbirds, butterflies and various other animals who come by to visit.
Yesterday I saw the most amazing interaction between the white faced monkeys and one of my macaws (I have three that live in my room with me, one with a next on my bathroom floor!) My macaw, Marley, was busy eating at his feeder and a white faced came up to get some too (they seem to love scrambled eggs!). At first Marley put up with it and shared his food with the monkey. Then that moneky left and another one came. Then another. By the third monkey, Marley was done sharing his food with them and started to chase them away. I saw the most incredible facial expressions on the monkeys as they sat and tried to figure out how to get around Marley to get to the eggs and the most incredible positions of hanging with their tails, stretching out all fours, it was MONKEY YOGA AT IT’S BEST!… it is one of these things that can’t be explained in words, but I didn’t dare get up to get the video camera because I didn’t want to miss a thing!
Today I have seen three kinds of birds that I have not seen before. When you think that I have now lived here for ten years and can still see new things on a daily basis, it is really mind blowing. It truly is the most biologically intense place on earth. One of these days I am going to start video taping these things and put it on YouTube to share with the world. It is a one of a kind lifestyle here and I wouldn’t have it any other way!!!
And just out in my front yard, on the beautiful Pacific Ocean, we have year round humpback whales and thousands of dolphins…. but more on that in another blog!!!
Love you and bless you!
